The Jetty was goin' off today! No, really!

One of the power plants not in use at the El Segundo jetty was demolished this morning to make way for a new more efficient one that they will start building summer  2011. It was pretty spectacular. There has been a lot of second hand information about what’s going to happen to the nether region between Grand and 45th. The chatter has been that there will be a barge parked out front of the jetty to haul away the scraps.  Extended beach closures, massive sand bagging, and general man-handling of one of the South Bays few uncrowded break looks to be what we have to look forward to. Disruptions in the contours of this stretch of beach and the flow of sand will have an effect on the waves for El Porto and beyond. We can all hope that there will be an amazing mysto sandbar that will result from this upheaval. Call me a pessimist, but the way these things usually go are that things like this make surf spots disappear. What is for sure is that the jetty will never be like it once was. So it goes.

Some footage from theKABC news-copter. The action starts around 2:20.

Corporate America loves Davenport Longboards!

The recent holiday ad spot for Bank of America has been catching the eye of longboarders everywhere. It was filmed at  Mollusk Surf Shop and has some pretty nice rides in the background. At a closer look there happens to be a couple Davenports and Finelines! The actress in the commercial is standing in front of two Davenports, a white pig with a black stripe and a brown 4065. Thanks B of A! Oh, and don’t forget to spend  this holiday season!

Introducing Tyler Critelli's Pig-lite Model!

I just finished Tyler Critelli’s new lightweight pig off-shoot,  He wanted a lighter narrower pig. The nose is 16 ¼", the width is 22 ¾" and the tail in 16 ½". The board is 3" thick and total length is 9'3". The foam was green weight which is much lighter than my beloved classic or brown. As for the glassing it has two layers 6 oz. top and one layer 6 oz. and a 4 oz. tail patch. The cloth I used was not volan weave but “S” glass.  I usually just stick to volan because it holds more resin and has a nice greenish hue to it. This newer smaller weave holds less resin and in the end is lighter. The only drawback is that it is weaker and white but the board is lighter! The overall template is a pig middle and tail, and since he likes narrow noses I played around with a pintail and came up with a curve that fits.

9'0" Roberts Pig

I was able to track down and find this nice early 60’s pin tail pig built by Robert Millner of Playa del Rey, CA. Thanks to the kind people at Kennedy Surfboards in Woodland Hills I now have another Roberts to play with. This board has been restored and is 100% rideable! Unfortunately, I am a little large to ride this one so I am looking for volunteers. So far I have not had any takers. It looks fun and is another great example of a early to mid 60’s pig built by a great shaper and craftsman Robert Millner.
