Memorial Day

I know most of us see memorial day a reason to party like crazy for three days because summer has started, however NEVER forget why we get to enjoy our freedom! Memorial day is a day to remember, honor and love those who serve, have served and those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom. So take a break from you beer and reflect how we all came to be…..Americans; Semper Fi; OOOO Raahh!

Custom 9'9" Stepdeck on it's way to Ventura

This board is a step-deck in terminology only, the step is there to reduce swing weight while turning. The customer like to turn in preferance to noseriding, so I took out some foam on the nose. Traditional step-decks have a bit more rocker in the nose and a very prominent “step” in the front third of the board, this was designed to flex down crating negative rocker allowing the board to plane on the waters surface andf allow for better, longer noserides due to the negative rocker crated by the “stepped” or reduced nose deck volume.

9'9" The Thing in the works...

I am very stoked about this shape. Since there has been a lot of talk about the thing recently Johnny at Mollusk and I decided to make a stocker for their shop. The dimensions are 18 5/8" nose, 23 ½" wide, 17 ¼" tail with the tradmark Brian Hilbers 10" wide tail block. I will post some more pictures once I get it glassed and finish the surprise gloss color work. Go to Mollusk and check out their fine selection of Finelines and Andersons that are also in stock.

A Dream Come True

On Tuesday, May 10th at 5pm Pacific Standard Time, I Adam Davenport took a ride in one of the rarest planes of all time. A B-24H Consolidated Liberator heavy bomber for WWII. For those of you who know me I am a history buff, specifically WWII  and WWII bombers. Since I was a kid I always loved the B-24. Its menacing looks, its fierce and reliable reputation in combat and more importantly the men who flew, fought and perished in these majestic aircraft. This plane was coming through on a US tour and I had to pounce on the opportunity to fly in it. Thanks to a nice donation for my parents I was able to realize my dream of spending time aloft in a WWII bomber and the fact that this particular plane was a B-24, my favorite!

Fun with the Russell Step-Deck

Recently, I have been riding a 10'1 Russell Step-deck given to me by my friend Nick from Santa Barbara. The board is fun to look at and fun to ride, the cut-backs are really fun because of the reduced swing weight in the nose. It noserides well and it is fun being up front. Since my surfing looks like a gorilla ice skating for the first time we posted a movie of Alex Knost doing a Russell step-deck justice, From the movie one can conclude that this model is a lot of fun and works just fine. Russell Surfboards is one of the core-surf shops/board builders in Newport Beach, check out their website at http://www.surfboardsbyrussell.com/home/

Myth Busting The Thing

It has come to my attention through some friends that there is significant chatter in the water about the Thing model that I build. It is a direct off-shoot of the fineline Zombie model. Brian Hilbers is one of my mentors and in teaching me technique and helping hone my skills as a shaper and board builder I approached him and asked for permission to make a similar version of his Zombie model, Brian helped supervise the making of the template and gave me pointers when I shaped my personal Thing. I made my template from scratch by using a rod and baton technique which Brian suggested to me. The tails of both boards are similar however the noses’ are different.   My old board had a zombie logo on it, which was my way of giving Brian the credit he so rightly deserves. All through my shaping career I have looked up to Brian as a influence, I love the style of his boards and the way they surf. Brian has been a major influence upon my surfing and shaping. i only hope that people realize every shaper has to come from somewhere and every shaper has a muse, Brian is my man along with Tyler Hatzikian and Scott Anderson. These three master-craftsman have taken the time and had the patience to teach me how to build boards. I hope this helps , support these guys and take a look at what they do.
